A town on the right bank
Benijófar covers only a few square kilometres of the Vega Baja. It was settled in the eighteenth century under an alfonsine licence to farm land watered from the Segura.
The river both sustains the town and threatens it. Channels feed the orchards, the flood of 1957 swept through the streets, and a traditional waterwheel, mill and weir still stand at the water's edge.
